Broadly speaking, translation can be divided into two major branches. Literary translation involving the translation of novels and other reading material and industrial translations involving the translation of international documents used in the business arena. The translation course offered at Myer Japan English Conversation School (Daimyo School) covers industrial translations. Literary and industrial translations each have their own appeal, however, industrial translations are probably more useful in terms of job opportunities and developing a career in translation. You can make a living more easily from industrial translations.
The course will be held at Myer’s Translation School located at 2 Daimyo, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, Japan. We aim to run small classes similar to university seminars where close communication can be maintained between student and instructor. The Daimyo School of Myer English Conversation School is situated between Akasaka Station and Tenjin Station on the Fukuoka Subway Fukuoka-Kuko Line.
Anyone can become a translator, however, it is difficult to have a long-standing career in translation and a variety of skills are required in order to become a successful translator. You need to consistently produce quality translations or the demand for your services as a translator will disappear. We will provide you with an introduction on how to sell your translation products as a translator given by a translator who is actively working in the translation industry as a Japanese-English and English-Japanese translator with over 10 years practical experience in the industry. Because translation can be considered to be a skill of the hands and as such a craft, rather than simply being taught about the theory of translation from an academic perspective, you will have the chance to take a short-cut to becoming a professional translator by listening to the advice of a translator who is an expert in his craft and has picked up a number of skills and tricks of the trade over his many years in the business and who knows how to put these skills to work. Translation is more a craft than a theoretical subject.
Shunichi Nagae is a translator of industrial documents. He graduated from Tokyo University and lives in Fukuoka City.
There is so much to say about translation, however, we must restrict ourselves to a timeframe. Over the 12 month course, we will take a general practical overview of translation. The course will be held for classes of 3 students and up.
The skills required by translators to carry out industrial translations on a commercial basis depend on the type of document, however, generally speaking, a translator must be able to understand the source text “have an adequate level of reading competency in the source language” and be able to manipulate the text perfectly into the target language (have native level language skills in the target language). A solid knowledge of the source language allows a translator to read the source document correctly and avoid mistranslation and, therefore, proficiency in the source language is an essential skill in translation. The purpose of a translation is to allow information contained in a source document to be understood by readers in another language and mistranslation of a document is unacceptable. In this course, we assume that students will be native English speakers who are sufficiently proficient in Japanese holding a JPLT N2 certificate or higher or other qualification equivalent thereto.

Translation (to English) of Japanese contracts and documents in other specialized areas and information on the Civil Code as well as information required in translation on the Companies Act and the Land and Building Lease Act.

This is an introductory course to Japanese-English translation geared towards aspiring translators. The course caters to native or near native speakers of English living in the Fukuoka area who wish to take up a career in the Japanese-English translation of industrial documents. This translation course will also greatly increase your ability to understand texts in the source language and is a great program for those wanting to further their study of the Japanese language.
